At Long Island Smile, we have over 20 years experience in restorative dentistry. We offer implant restorations, crowns, bridges, endodontics (root canals), full and partial dentures, extractions, periodontal surgery, and the most advanced filling techniques.

In addition, we pride ourselves in our knowledge of occlusion and advanced restorative techniques. We are currently one of the only dental offices in the New York metropolitan area to use the T-Scan® computerized bite analysis system. This technology has enabled us to better understand a patient’s neuromuscular physiology and, in turn, prevent deterioration of dental structures. It has also aided in the analysis and treatment of oral facial pain caused by imbalances in a patient’s bite.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made of pure titanium onto which a single crown, a bridge, or even a full set of dentures can be attached. They have become the first choice in tooth replacement due to their clinical success over the past 20 years. They are a conservative way of replacing missing teeth since they do not require damaging adjacent teeth for a traditional bridge. Easy to clean and maintain, they mimic natural teeth. Implants are also a solution for denture support. They can restore confidence and chewing capabilities for full denture wearers.

Dentures

Dentures are used to replace missing teeth and any adjacent tissues with a removable dental appliance that is usually made of acrylic resin or a combination of metals. Dentures are usually separated into two distinct categories, complete and partial. Complete dentures are used to replace all teeth and any adjacent tissues, while partial dentures act as bridges and fill the gap where one or more natural teeth are missing.

Our office uses the Equipoise removable partial denture system. This system is designed to protect and preserve the teeth that hold the partial in a patient’s mouth, as well as strengthen the bone that supports them. Along with this tremendous advantage, these partial dentures do not show metal hooks and clasps and are therefore extremely aesthetic.

They do not appear as though a patient is wearing a removable prosthesis.

Fillings

A filling is a restoration of part of a tooth’s lost structure with such materials as plastics, porcelain or alloys. In modern dentistry, there are many substances that can be used to achieve a very natural look.

Bridges

Bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth. They are comprised of a replacement tooth (or teeth) supported on either end by an adjacent tooth.

Traditional bridges, or fixed bridges, as they are sometimes called, are made with a false tooth or teeth that are connected to dental crowns on either side. The teeth adjacent to the missing tooth area are fitted with the crowns to hold the false tooth (or teeth) in place.

Resin-bonded bridges consist of a pontic, or replacement tooth, that is fused to “arms” that are then bonded to the remaining natural teeth using an undetectable tooth-colored resin.

Crowns

Crowns are used to reinforce teeth that are weakened or cracked. They cover the entire surface area of a damaged tooth restoring strength and beauty while preserving as much of the original tooth’s structure as possible.

Endodontics

Endodontics, or root canal therapy, is performed when the nerve tissue inside a tooth has become infected or traumatized. After the damaged nerve has been removed, the nerve chamber is filled with a special root canal filling material. Depending on the amount of tooth structure remaining after root canal therapy is complete, it may be necessary to cover the tooth with a crown. Sometimes a reinforcing “post” made of either metal or a fiber material is placed in the tooth to help support the crown. Root canal therapy enables the patient to keep their original tooth as opposed to undergoing complete extraction.

We use state of the art rotary endodontic technology. This process has made root canal therapy a much easier process than those of the past. The vast majority of root canal therapy done today is painless. If you have concerns about this procedure, please call us so we can answer any of your questions.

Periodontal Therapy

Periodontal therapy is the treatment of diseases of the bone and gum tissue surrounding the teeth.

Minimal inflammation and maintenance of the gum tissue can be treated by one of our highly skilled hygienists. Using special instruments and polishing pastes to clean the surfaces of the teeth, our hygienists can prevent build up of materials that lead to gum inflammation. In more advanced inflammatory conditions deeper cleanings known as scalings are done. With the latest topical anesthetic ointments this procedure is pain-free.

Each patient in our practice is given oral hygiene instruction so that they can care for their mouth at home between visits. Our ultimate goal is to prevent recurring dental disease. We hope to see our patients for maintenance visits only and hope that we never have to do extensive treatment due to neglect.

When inflammation of the gum tissue is severe and infection occurs, or if the infection spreads to the bone under the gums, it may become necessary to have treatment done by a periodontist. A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in treatments of the gums and bone surrounding the teeth. These procedures can save teeth from becoming loose and having to be extracted.

The medical world has become increasingly aware of the importance of periodontal therapy in the prevention and control of many systemic illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and low birth weight. This is because chronic gum infections can affect other parts of our body through the blood stream. We can not emphasize enough the benefits of good oral health.

Technology

We are thrilled to be able to practice dentistry in an era of technological advancement. Our office has been computerized since 1987. With the advantages of technology come better diagnostic tools, better treatment techniques, and patient management options.

We have always invested in technology to better treat our patients and give them the best that dentistry has to offer.

We are currently one of the only dental offices in the New York metropolitan area to use the T-Scan® computerized bite analysis system. We were one of the first offices in the country to invest in the DIAGNOdent® laser cavity detection system. This tool “reads” the surface of the tooth with a laser and can detect decay even before x-rays. We have the latest technology for root canal therapy. Using both rotary endodontic systems and special electronic tools to measure inside roots we can minimize x-rays during root canals. All of our operatories are equipped with computer monitors and intra-oral cameras so that we can better diagnose problems and communicate them to our patients.

We only use high quality dental materials and high quality dental laboratories that are located in the United States. We abide by very strict sterilization codes. Your health is our number one priority.
