The Canary System™ Williston Park, NY
The Canary System is a low-powered laser-based device that uses a novel combination of heat and light to directly examine the crystal structure of teeth and map areas of tooth decay. The Canary System offers breakthrough technology for evidence-based detection and monitoring of dental caries without the need for dental x-rays.
The Canary System is the only caries detection device linked to the crystal structure of the tooth instead of the presence of bacteria, and is the only device that can detect decay on all tooth surfaces, including interproximal areas and around the margins of restorations or fillings. The Canary System detects and monitors caries across the entire spectrum of the disease process so it becomes an integral part of the preventive and restorative aspects of oral health care.
The system's handheld laser emits a low-power, pulsating light to collect unique signatures of luminescence and heat released from the tooth. This laser light interacts differently with healthy enamel than with decayed enamel, providing the dentist with a tool to identify carious lesions as deep as 5mm below the tooth surface and as small as 50 microns in size.
This new system will:
• |
Provide early detection of small cavities, so that our dental team can remineralize the enamel shell and avoid filling placement |
• |
Be less invasive and safer than traditional approaches for detection and monitoring of early-stage tooth decay |
• |
Identify lesions earlier requiring a smaller less-invasive restoration, if required. |
• |
Extend the natural life cycle of the tooth by providing an opportunity to remineralize the lesion, thus avoiding the placement and replacement of fillings in teeth with the potential risks this entails |
• |
Focus on prevention as opposed to intervention |
Early detection of dental caries allows decay to be halted or reversed using remineralization therapies, sealants, or varnishes. Therapies such as the application of fluoride can repair teeth by reconstituting the minerals into decayed areas. In some cases, the lesion may warrant a restoration that would have otherwise gone undetected by traditional diagnostic approaches
The Canary System progressively shifts the dental care approach from intervention (filling of cavities) to prevention. It is pain-free, safe, and non-invasive and provides early detection of tooth decay. In short, it shifts the treatment endpoints from waiting for a cavity to break through the enamel shell before treatment to allowing dental professionals to apply and monitor the changes with various remineralizing therapies, or restore the lesion at a far more minimally-invasive stage.
