CARING FOR YOUR DENTURES
Williston Park, NY

Caring for your dentures will take a little consideration, but can be done easily. When a patient is outfitted with partial or full dentures, our team at Long Island Smile will take the time to walk you through the steps of daily use, how to grow used to them and how to care for them. It will take a little effort, but can be easily incorporated into your daily routine.

When caring for your dentures, you will want to:

•  Look Your Denture Over: Take a moment every day to take a quick inspection of your dentures. Look for any damage. We want your denture to be as comfortable as possible, and damage can affect their wear. Patients who are wearing partial dentures will want to review their clasps or attachments for any damage.
•  Brush, Floss and Rinse: You will want to brush, floss and rinse your denture, along with your oral cavity, as you would natural teeth, twice a day. Dentures, like teeth, are exposed to bacteria, you will want to remove food, debris, and plaque as you do for your natural teeth.
•  Soak Your Dentures: If you remove your full or partial denture while you sleep, keep them wet in a soaking solution or water. Do not allow your denture to dry out, we do not want the shape to alter. If you are using a soaking solution, be sure to rinse the denture before placing them back in your mouth.
•  Be Cautious of What You Eat: It will be necessary to take the foods you eat into consideration when you have dentures. You may find it not only difficult but painful for your gums to chew crunchy items. You also may find that sticky or tough foods can dislodge your denture.

Getting Used to Dentures

Unfortunately, traditional dentures will never truly feel like your natural teeth, that is because they are not connected to your jaw. Traditional dentures are held in place using adhesives and suction, or if you have traditional partial dentures, they are held in by clasping onto nearby teeth. They will affect your speech and your diet. Patients will want to practice both speaking and chewing in the privacy of their home before attempting to be social, it will take time. Today, there are options that can assist in the feel and function, helping dentures feel like your natural teeth. This can be achieved by having your full or partial denture retained with dental implants.

Implant Retained Dentures

Dental implants can be used to hold your partial or full denture in place. A dental implant is a post that we surgically inserted into the jawbone. Once the bone has healed around the implant, it will serve as a firm post to attach a denture to. This will significantly help with retention, while also preventing the rocking or shifting of the denture, which is often a complaint. Implant retained dentures vastly improve the patient's overall comfort with the device.
