Williston Park, NY
Scheduling professional dental cleanings with our hygienist is an important aspect of your oral health. Semi-annual cleanings are just as important to your oral health as is brushing daily and flossing. The plaque and calculus removal that you receive during your cleaning can not be achieved at home. With specialized training and tools, our hygienist at Long Island Smile will:

Remove any plaque build-up along the rim of your teeth and gums and on the surfaces.
Plaque forms naturally from saliva and food particles. It is filled with bacteria. As plaque collects on your teeth, if not brushed away, it will cause decay, gum disease, and gingivitis. |

Remove tartar from teeth surfaces.
Tartar, also known as calculus, is plaque that has been allowed to remain in place and then hardened on the teeth. Its removal requires a trained hand, so as to not damage the enamel of your tooth. Tartar that has extended below the gum line is an indication of gum disease. |

Following your cleaning, our hygienist will polish your teeth with a gritty paste to remove stains, brighten your teeth, and give you a clean feeling. |

Examinations
Having annual examinations, with Dr. Seltzer or Dr. Rein, can help detect and prevent oral health issues before they become more serious. We like having consistent dental check-ups, because it helps us monitor the status of your mouth. We can spot changes and catch problems while they are still small. If small problems are left untreated, they can become worse and then require more extensive and expensive procedures to repair. Your dental examination will generally include the following:

Screening for symptoms of gum disease including red, puffy gums that bleed easily, gums that are receding from your teeth, or gum pockets exceeding 3mm. |

An evaluation on the amount of decay present on your teeth. |

Tracking the measurement of your gum pockets. |

Screening for anything unusual, including tumors and cysts, that could indicate oral cancer. |

An x-ray examination to look for things that cannot be seen with the naked eye, including problems below the gums. |
Regular examinations by Dr. Neal Seltzer and Dr. Jeffrey Rein are very important for your health. Remember, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." –Benjamin Franklin
Digital X-rays
Digital x-rays are an important tool in dentistry. It allows us to detect problems early and catch hidden problems. X-rays allow us to catch internal tooth decay, the need for root canal therapy, cysts that have formed due to infection, tumors, and teeth that are still coming in or impacted.
